Umbrella legislation
Acupuncturists and some other health professions in Newfoundland and Labrador are governed under an innovative legislative framework referred to as “Umbrella legislation”. Umbrella legislation regulates numerous professions under one statute. This is particularly effective for health professions that do not have a large number of practitioners. Legislation is for the sole purpose of protection of the public.
Designated representatives from each profession unite to form a multidisciplinary regulatory “Council”. The membership of each distinct profession unites to form its own professional governing body or “College”. The roles of Council and College though collaborative are distinctly different
